A good garden lighting plan starts with what you want to see and do after sunset. Before choosing fittings, walk through your garden at dusk and look outside from the rooms you use most. These two viewpoints often reveal different priorities.

Start with movement through the garden

Mark the route from the driveway to the front door, steps between levels and paths to an outdoor seating area. Look for awkward corners and changes in surface. Plan where light is useful, rather than placing a fitting at every equal interval. Keep the source out of your normal line of sight where possible.

Choose a few features to highlight

A mature tree, textured wall or planted bed can give a garden depth at night. Select a small number of features that work together. Lighting every object with the same intensity can flatten the view. Consider how a feature looks from indoors as well as from the path beside it.

Think about outdoor living

A dining area needs a different atmosphere from a front entry. Consider whether you want to eat, read, entertain or simply enjoy the view. Avoid aiming a bright light straight at chairs or windows. Ask your designer to explain where each fitting points and what its purpose is.

Account for the garden as it grows

Planting changes over time. Leave access for maintenance and consider whether fittings may need repositioning as shrubs fill out. Record cable routes and fitting locations so later garden work can be planned around them.

Make controls part of the plan

Discuss which areas should operate together and how you want to switch them on. A simple arrangement may suit one property; another may benefit from separate zones. Ask how timers or other controls can be adjusted when routines change.

Prepare for a useful quote

Bring photos, a rough sketch, your main priorities and a budget range. Explain which areas matter most so the design can be staged if needed. A clear scope helps you compare proposals based on the result, fittings and installation work included.
